Missed the Late Renewal Deadline? What to Know…

Monday, February 3, 2014 - 7 comments

Reminder-CTEC Registered Tax Preparers (CRTPs) who missed the January 15th deadline to renew late must now start over, retake the 60-hour qualifying education course and register as a new tax preparer.

It also means those tax preparers cannot prepare any tax returns for a fee until their registration is current with CTEC.

During the 2013 tax season, CTEC received a number of phone calls from consumers and the media regarding CRTPs who continued to do business with an expired registration. Those CRTPs were reported to the Franchise Tax Board.

The law is clear. Preparing tax returns without a current registration is against state law even if the CRTP plans to register at a later date.

To register as a new tax preparer, the following requirements must be completed:

·      60-hours of qualifying education from a CTEC-approved education provider

·      Proof of current bond

·      Valid Preparer Tax Identification Number (PTIN) from the IRS

·      Visa or MasterCard to pay the $25 registration fee

Education providers have ten days from the date the course was completed to upload the hours into the CTEC database. Individuals cannot register until those hours have been reported.
