Exempt employee status commented on Friday, May 8, 2015

Does a CTEC working for a CPA firm qualify for exempt employee status? Exempt employees must be "licensed" by the state, is the CTEC a license that reaches that level or simply a Registered tax preparer and a non-exempt employee?

If we understand your question correctly- an employee who works at a CPA firm and prepares client tax returns is exempt from CTEC registration- but only if the CPA signs each tax return prepared by the employee. If the employee prepares client tax returns and SIGNS each one, then he/she needs to register with CTEC. For more information regarding who is exempt and who must register with CTEC, click here- https://www.ftb.ca.gov/professionals/registered_tax_preparers.shtml
