CTEC Renewals Due Soon

Thursday, October 1, 2015 - 9 comments

Renewal registrations for CTEC Registered Tax Preparers (CRTPs) must be completed online by midnight on October 31, 2015.

To renew, CRTPs will need:

• 20 hours of completed continuing education (10 hours of federal tax law, 3 hours of federal tax law updates, 2 hours of ethics and 5 hours of state).

• A valid PTIN from the IRS.

• Current $5,000 surety bond.

• Visa or MasterCard to pay the $33 registration fee

To find an approved education provider, click here. For PTIN renewals, visit www.irs.gov/ptin.

Important Note: Education providers have ten business days from the date the course was completed to report hours earned to CTEC. Please do not wait until the last minute to complete the continuing education requirement.

It is strongly recommended CRTPs complete their 20 hours of continuing education no later than October 15th to avoid the risk of paying the $55 late fee.

CRTPs who do not renew by the October 31st deadline have until January 15, 2016 to renew late. CRTPs who do not renew by January 15th, will be required to start over, re-take the 60 hours of qualifying education, pass a final exam from a CTEC-approved education provider and re-register as a new CRTP.

According to California law, CRTPs cannot prepare any tax returns for a fee until their registration is current with CTEC. In some cases, certain employees who assist CRTPs with tax returns must also register with CTEC.

For more information regarding who is required to register, visit www.ftb.ca.gov and search the keyword “CTEC.”

Was October 31st also the deadline for new registered tax preparers? Is there a late registration date?

CTEC replied on Monday, November 2, 2015

The start date to register as a new tax preparer is November 1st each year. You have 18 months from the date the course was completed to register with CTEC. If you miss that 18 month period, your education will expire and you will have to re-take the 60 hour qualifying education course.

I'VE JUST FINISHED AND COMPLETED ALL REQUIREMENT COURSES; HOWEVER ON CTEC WEBSITE HAS NOT UP-DATED MY COMPLETION AND TODAY IS OCT 31 ALREADY; WHAT CAN I DO TO MEET THE ON TIME RENEWAL BY MID NIGHT OCT 31

CTEC replied on Monday, November 2, 2015

Your education provider is responsible for uploading your hours directly to the CTEC website. They have ten business days from the date for the course was completed to report those hours to CTEC.

No, the deadline always stays the same... even if it falls on a weekend.

Has this date for 20 continuing education hours been extended from October 31, 2015 to Monday November 2, 2015, midnight? Due to the weekend.
