Renewal Registrations Due Soon

Friday, September 30, 2016 - 18 comments

Renewal registrations for CTEC Registered Tax Preparers (CRTPs) must be completed online by midnight on October 31, 2016.

To renew, CRTPs will need:

• 20 hours of completed continuing education (10 hours of federal tax law, 3 hours of federal tax law updates, 2 hours of ethics and 5 hours of state).

• A valid PTIN from the IRS.

• Current $5,000 surety bond.

• Visa or MasterCard to pay the $33 registration fee

To find an approved education provider, click here. For PTIN renewals, visit www.irs.gov/ptin.

Important Note: Education providers have ten business days from the date the course was completed to report hours earned to CTEC. Please do not wait until the last minute to complete the continuing education requirement.

It is strongly recommended CRTPs complete their 20 hours of continuing education no later than October 15th to avoid the risk of paying the $55 late fee.

CRTPs who do not renew by the October 31st deadline have until January 15, 2017 to renew late. CRTPs who do not renew by January 15th, will be required to start over, re-take the 60 hours of qualifying education, pass a final exam from a CTEC-approved education provider and re-register as a new CRTP.

According to California law, CRTPs cannot prepare any tax returns for a fee until their registration is current with CTEC. In some cases, certain employees who assist CRTPs with tax returns must also register with CTEC.

For more information regarding who is required to register, visit www.ftb.ca.gov and search the keyword “CTEC.”

When is it to late to register with CTEC as a NEW tax preparer

CTEC replied on Monday, January 2, 2017

Hi Bryan, You have 18 months from the date you completed the qualifying education course to register as a new tax preparer. If you miss the 18 month deadline, you'll have to retake the course.

I completed the tax course and have been offered a job through the provider. The provider says they have submitted the information required for me to apply for the CTEC number. When I try to apply, I get a message that says I am not in the system. How long does it take for information submitted by the provider to update in your system?

CTEC replied on Tuesday, November 29, 2016

Hi Elizabeth, Education providers have ten days from the date the course was completed to report your hours to CTEC. The hours will show up immediately after they report it. If it has been more than ten days, please contact CTEC at 877-850-2832.

Is it too late to become certified as a tax preparer for the 2016-2017 tax season (as a first timer)?

CTEC replied on Monday, November 21, 2016

Registration for new tax preparers began on November 1st. After you complete the initial 60 hours of qualifying education, obtain a bond and register for a PTIN from the IRS, you can register with CTEC.

Can i renew my license and change my last name later or wait to renew until change my lst name?

CTEC replied on Thursday, October 27, 2016

You can renew your registration now and change your name later. It is more important that you renew on time if you plan to prepare tax returns during the 2017 tax season. Once you change your name, please contact CTEC staff at info@ctec.org showing the documentation.

If someone is in the hospital and therefore unable to file on time, will CTEC waive the late fee?

CTEC replied on Tuesday, October 25, 2016

Hi Barbara- You can write a letter to the CTEC board explaining the situation and ask for the late fee to be waived. The next board meeting is November 18th. Letters can be submitted to CTEC staff at info@ctec.org.
