Reminder: New Late Renewal Deadline

Monday, December 3, 2012 - 11 comments

As of November 1, 2012, all CTEC registered tax preparers (CRTPs) have until January 15th of each year to renew late. CRTPs who failed to meet the October 31, 2012 renewal deadline only have until January 15, 2013 to renew late.

CRTPs who have not renewed by January 15th will have to start over, re-take the qualifying education course and register as a new CRTP. Information from the past CTEC registration (i.e. completed education, registration history and prior CTEC number) will not be transferred to the new registration.

Before the policy change, CRTPs had a one-year grace period to renew late.

The focus of the new deadline is to improve compliance. By law CRTPs cannot prepare any tax returns for a fee until they are compliant with CTEC, which is why the Council decided to shorten the late renewal grace period from 12 months to 10 weeks.

I hate to say this, but CTEC, you did a horrible job at getting this word out. I got my first notification on this new policy today 1/23/13; days AFTER the deadline. I have receive no other mail, email or anything. I can't remember the last time I've been this disappointed.

CTEC replied on Thursday, January 24, 2013

Please understand our first notice of this change dates back to the CTEC May 2011 newsletter. More notices were also included in the August 2011, January 2012, May 2012, August 2012 and January 2013 newsletters. We also posted the change on, yes, this blog, as well as the blogs title "Reminder: More Registration Changes Ahead" and "New CRTP Requirements Reminder."

My cert expired Oct 31, 2012 and have not done any renewals. Since it is Jan 15, 2013 and can not renew as no educ credits have been taken yet, what do I need to do? Thanks.

CTEC replied on Thursday, January 17, 2013

Unfortunately, you will have to start over and retake the 60 hour qualifying education course, then register as a new tax preparer with CTEC. Call the CTEC office at 877-850-2832 for more information.

i am registered tax preparer. i do not prepare any tax return for a fee. do i still need 20 hrs of continuing education, if yes uptill when.my certficate expires oct 31st,2012.

CTEC replied on Monday, January 7, 2013

Are you volunteering as a tax preparer? If you do not prepare returns for a fee, then you do not need to register with CTEC. The law is limited to only those who prepare returns for a fee.

Shrinking Certificates? I just received my 2013 certificate in the mail and it's a measly 3 1/2 by 8 1/2 inches. Presumably the size has shrunk for cost reasons, which I can understand. Still, I would like the option of a full sized certificate, even if I have to pay more to get it. Did the Council consider making this an option?

CTEC replied on Wednesday, December 12, 2012

Yes, the Council has discussed the certificate option at length. The Council decided to go back to the way the certificates used to be when the Department of Consumer Affairs handled the program for both accuracy purposes and for cost reasons.
