Renewal Registrations Begin August 1

The CTEC 2019/2020 renewal registration cycle starts August 1, 2019 and ends October 31, 2019.

How do I renew online?

To renew online, click here and follow the prompts. To renew, you must have:

• Basic personal information.

• Current bond information and bond certificate. If your bond information is current, you are not required to upload your current bond again. If your bond is expired, you must update your bond information and upload a copy of your new bond.

• 20 hours of continuing education (10 hours of federal tax law, 3 hours of federal tax law updates, 2 hours of ethics and 5 hours of state) already uploaded into the CTEC database by your education provider.

• A renewed IRS Preparer Tax Identification Number (PTIN).

• Visa/Debit or MasterCard/Debit to pay the $33 registration fee.

How do I renew by mail?

To renew by mail, you must have:

• A copy of your bond showing the current expiration date.

• Copy of education completion certificate(s).

• A renewed IRS Preparer Tax Identification Number (PTIN) approval letter.

• Completed 2019/2020 renewal application found on ctec.org.

• Personal check, cashier’s check or money order for $33 made payable to CTEC.

• Mail all information, to CTEC (P.O. Box 2890, Sacramento, CA 95812-2890) postmarked by October 31, 2019.

CTEC Registered Tax Preparers (CRTPs) will get a CTEC Certificate of Compliance by mail within four to six weeks of approval. If any of the above documents are missing, your application will be sent back. If your application is postmarked by October 31st, but is returned to you due to missing information, you will be required to pay the $55 late fee. CTEC certificates must be made visible to taxpayers at your primary place of business!

AVOID THIS MISTAKE!
Last year many CRTPs logged into their account, however, instead of following the renewal steps, they “reprinted” their CTEC certificate for $10 and thought they registered. Renewals can only be completed by following the above steps and paying the $33 registration fee! No exceptions.

What if my education has not been reported?

To renew online, all of your education must have been electronically reported to CTEC by your education provider. If your education is not showing in your CTEC account, call your education provider(s) and have them upload the hours electronically into the CTEC database.

CTEC staff does not upload education. If you took education at an IRS Forum or through an IRS webinar, and the education is not showing in your account, call the CTEC office.

Remember, CTEC policy allows education providers to submit education to CTEC 30 business days between January 16 and June 30, and within 10 business days between July 1 and January 15, from the date the education was completed.

H&R Block forgot to pay registration fees on due date October 31, 2019. I did work for them until March 3rd, 2020. I noticed I never received my CTEC license from District Manager. Now CTEC canceled me because I didn't pay fees. November 1st, 2020 was out from CTEC. I learned on Dec. 4th, 2020 that I am not able to pay the fees H&R Block did not pay. WHY CTEC did not send me a bill for the fees. CTEC new I took the requirement classes. Also these classes were in the IRS PTIN information sheet. After filing with California returns, CTEC should check if those preparer paid their fees and send the bill to those preparers for the fees.

I tried to login to CTEC website to renew my account but it indicates that my license has expired as of Oct 31st, 2019 & I required to take 60 hours Education Course. Just to mention that I finished the 20hrs course on 10/28/19 and tried to login but it was mentioned that CTEC didn’t receive the course Completion yet. and need to do 60 hours from the scratch.

I have the same issue, completed 20 hours and now it's saying I have to do the 60 hours but I always do the late registration, never had a problem until today. I'll wait until Thursday but totally stressful about the now need to do 60 hours training and my registration has expired

fp commented on Tuesday, December 31, 2019

I just got the same message. I completed everything on time and the education provider stated that they submitted my hours of completion to CTEC last week. However now CTEC has my registration Expired. Today is not a State holiday, so why not answer the phones?

Same thing is happening with me I completed the 20 hour and system said I have to do 60 .... please fix this is stressfull

Got this message? "Your CTEC registration has EXPIRED. You are required to complete 60-hours of Qualifying Education from a CTEC Approved Education Provider and register as a new preparer." So CTEC has done it again! I just called my education provider and was reassured that this is the same problem experienced by myriad CTRPs on October 31st, and that they have communicated to CTEC that their website is having a problem. I was also reassured that we have until Jan 15th to complete late registration with CTEC for the 2020 tax season. I will be checking in on the CTEC website periodically to see if they have corrected the problem. I did call them, but they won't answer their phones so I have to trust my education provider when they say that I do not yet have to spend for the 60-hour QE course. ;-) CTEC website Q&A (I finally found it!) confirms this: "CRTPs who do not renew their registration by January 15th of each year, will have to re-take the 60-hour qualifying education course by an approved education provider and register as a new tax preparer with CTEC." In the meantime, I just want to let CTEC know that it is an EXTREMELY DISCONCERTING MESSAGE to be told that I suddenly need to complete the 60-hour QE training in order to be able to do tax returns! OMG, the STRESS!

Hopefully they figure out there's an issue and get it fixed so we can renew online. I don't know what else to do since they don't answer the phone.

Lizette commented on Thursday, October 31, 2019

I have been calling Ctec since 8 AM with no luck. My hours provider has already submitted my 20 hours and they dont not reflect on my account. It states my license is expired as of Nov 1 too.

Rebecca Montes commented on Thursday, October 31, 2019

Mitch Khorshed this happened to me as well and I've been trying to call Customer Service since 9 am and the phone keeps ringing.

I just applied for my EA on Oct 7 2019. Do I need to renew my CTEC in order to prepare taxes in January 2020? I've heard it takes up to 90 days to get my EA number which would make it mid January.
