New Advertising Campaign Starts December

Wednesday, December 1, 2010 - 7 comments

The California Tax Education Council will launch a new advertising campaign starting late December.  The campaign will focus on bus and billboard ads (English and Spanish) in Los Angeles, San Diego and Fresno.  CTEC also plans to run Internet ads year round that will target consumers statewide.

Remember the mission of CTEC is to protect consumers by ensuring unlicensed paid tax preparers are (at minimum) educated and bonded as required by the California State Legislature.  The goal of the campaign is to build consumer awareness to verify if a tax preparer is legal or not.

The council decided to focus on Los Angeles, San Diego and Fresno based on enforcement reports from the Franchise Tax Board.  CTEC allocated $150,000 for its 2010/2011 advertising campaign.

What are the requirements for advertising for my own tax business. Am I required to put my tax preparer number on ads and or business cards like real estate agents or insurance agents?

CTEC replied on Wednesday, January 29, 2014

CTEC does not have a policy requiring CRTPs to include their number on ads or business cards, however, it is encouraged. That said, CRTPs are required by law to provide the bond number to clients.

CTEC should not make CRTPs take the federal course twice since the IRS is already doing that. Is something going on between CTEC and education providers? All CTEC is going to do is make us charge more for tax preparation...and that is helping taxpayers?

CTEC has conformed its federal CE requirement to the IRS' so CRTPs do not have to take the federal course twice. All courses you take to meet the IRS requirements will also count for CTEC requirements. The new CTEC hours are 15 hours federal (same breakdown as IRS) and five hours state.

Will you PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD correct the Yoda-speak on this first (blue) bus ad!? The correct grammar is not: "LEGAL ILLEGAL Your tax preparer is?" NO! It is supposed to say: "Is your tax preparer legal or illegal?" Or, something like that. The second one is grammatically correct, but the first has GOT TO GO!!! PLEASE FIX IT! It makes the city of Los Angeles, the bus system and you, CTEC, look VERY uneducated and, quite frankly, illiterate. Thank you. Love, Ms. Grammar
