CTEC Renewal Registration Cycle Starts August 1st

How Do I Renew Online?
To renew online, click on the button Already a CRTP – Click here to login to your account located on the homepage. To renew, you must have:

Basic personal information

Current bond information and bond certificate - Bonds MUST be uploaded through your account on the CTEC website

20 hours of continuing education (10 hours of federal tax law, three hours of federal tax law updates, 2 hours of ethics and 5 hours of state) already uploaded into the CTEC database

A new or renewed IRS Preparer Tax Identification Number (PTIN)
- Visa or MasterCard to pay the $33 registration fee
AVOID THIS MISTAKE!
Some CRTPs continue to log into their account, however, instead of following the renewal steps, they “reprint” their CTEC certificate for $10 and think they registered. Renewals can only be completed by following the above steps and paying the $33 registration fee!
Common Questions
Below are the most commonly asked questions from CRTPs regarding the renewal registration cycle. CTEC gets overwhelmed with phone calls during the last minute rush so please read carefully and plan ahead.
What if my education has not been reported?
To renew online all of your education must be electronically reported to CTEC by your education provider. If your education is not showing up, call your education provider(s) to upload the hours into the system and make sure they have your valid CTEC ID number. Remember CTEC policy allows education providers 10 days from the date the course was completed to report hours earned so please plan ahead.
Is unused education from last year accepted?
CTEC’s registration cycle runs from November 1st through October 31st of each year, which means any education taken between those dates is good for the current registration cycle.
For example, did you complete a course on or after November 1, 2020? Any unused education completed from that date until October 31, 2021 can be used towards the new 2021/2022 CTEC renewal cycle.
CTEC education providers do not register you with CTEC. They are only submitting the education to CTEC. You have to make the final step to complete your registration, which also includes paying the CTEC $33 renewal fee.
Am I required to display my certificate?
All current certificates must be made visible to consumers at the primary place of business. CTEC certificates can be displayed at the entrance, on desks or another conspicuous location where business activities are performed.
What if I miss the renewal deadline?
CRTPs who fail to meet the October 31, 2021 renewal deadline have until January 15, 2022 to pay the $55 late fee, plus the $33 registration fee and renew late.
CRTPs who miss the January 15th late renewal deadline will have to start over, pass a criminal background check and submit fingerprint images to CTEC, PLUS retake the 60-hour qualifying education course, obtain a bond, provide proof of a PTIN from the IRS, and pay CTEC fees.
Due to legislative changes that took effect July 1, 2020, CTEC cannot approve the status of applicants to register or reregister until a background check is passed.

I completed the continue education requierement on Oct, 29 but they donot update to CTEC, so I could not renew, is ther any way for me to avoice the late fee? I paid my PTIN.
Education providers have 10 days from the date the course was completed so you will have to renew late.
I have completed my 20 hours and paid for my renewal of my bond but do not have my new certification. My current Bond is still in effect until 1/31/22. Can I complete my renewal and up load my new certification when I receive it to avoid the late fee?

Hi, I just renewed my bond insurance today but have not received copy of my renewal. I have finished my continued education. I understand I need to pay penalty fee late renewal after Oct 31st, what other requirements I need to complete to renew my CTEC once I receive my bond insurance ?

I'm in a perpetual loop. I have no log in info, because H&R Block always took care of it. But if I try to start all over to create one, it says I already have one. I say I forgot my log in info and it gives me an error message. So, I can't log in and I can't reset my log in. So, what am I supposed to do to register for the upcoming tax season? Very frustrated!
Call the CTEC office and they can help you get access to your account. You must have proof of a bond since H&R Block pays for its own.
I used to work for H&R Block, so they always took care of my CTEC registration. Now, I'm doing it on my own. I don't have log in information. What do I do? It seems like if I try to say I'm new, it treats me like I have to take that full course.

If your bond doesn't expire until 2022, you should be okay for now. If you're having issues renewing, it might be due to missing education. If you completed 20 hours of continuing education from a CTEC-approved provider, contact them for a status update.
I am am a CRTP trying to renew. I login into my account and there is nothing on red on the classes list. I took all of them. I have a bond and all is good. But there is no button for me to click to renew. I called but no answered. Please help
It appears your education has not been reported to CTEC. Contact your education provider for an update. Keep in mind, they have 10 days from the date the course was completed to report hours earned.
Hi, I’m taking the 60 hour course, This is the first time I'm going to register on ctec, what is the due date to register?

The bond requirement is only one part of the renewal process. You still need to show proof of completing 20 hours of CE (your education provider will send that information to CTEC), plus pay the $33 registration fee with a Visa or MasterCard.

No, CTEC only processes complete applications. You will have to pay the late fee once you have completed your education.

You need to submit proof of an updated PTIN every year and bond expiration date, when necessary. Your education providers are responsible for submitting proof of your education every year.

No, you're good to go. Any continuing education you completed between November 1, 2020 through October 31, 2021 can be used for this renewal cycle.

We looked up your account and it looks like you're still missing five hours of California CE. If you completed it, contact your provider to have them upload it to our system.

Your hours must be uploaded into our system by your education provider. They have 10 days from the date you completed the course to do so. If the hours are showing on your account, you can renew as long as you have an up-to-date IRS PTIN, bond and credit card to pay the $33 renewal fee.
my education provider has told me that they only report to irs and it is up to me to report to anyone else. Is that correct or are they required to report to ctec as well?
That is incorrect. CTEC providers must submit your education within ten days of you completing your course. Should the provider still fail to submit your hours, please contact CTEC staff 877-850-2832 for assistance.

If I apply as a new preparer on October 31tst 2021 how long will be valid my CTEC registration? October 31st 2022? If I apply as new prepare on November 1st, do I have to pay $33 or the late fee of $55?. What happen if I apply on October 25th 2021? Will this registration be valid until October 31, 2021?
If you register as a new tax preparer on October 25, 2021, yes, your registration will only be valid until October 31, 2021. NEW registrations begin November 1st of each year. Renewal registration deadlines are October 31 of each year. So if you register as a new tax preparer on October 31st, your registration will expire on October 31st. That means you'd have to take the 20 hours of continuing education and re-register no later than January 15, 2022 - and yes, pay the $55 late fee. If you register on November 1st as a tax preparer, your registration is valid until October 31, 2022.
I cannot access to my existing CTEC CRTP. I tried to retrieve it using reset password link but It shows an error. This ctec was created by my former employer hrblock. I don't know my account login info. How do I retrieve it? Do I have to create a new CTEC?

I worked for hrblock from 2017 until 2019. For safety reasons I decided to do not work during tax seasons 2020 and 2021. Unfortunately my ctec expired on 11/2020 but my surety bond is still valid until 7/2022. my ptin also expired. Currently I am getting ready to work again in taxes for season 2022 from home with turbotax. Questions: Can I renew my CTEC? Do I need to do CE or QE? or Am I exempted in lieu experience due to my 2 years of experience preparing tax returns at hrblock. Also I noticed that your system shows that the surely bond is still active until 7/2022 Do I need a new surely bond for this new employer?
Because your registration expired, you will need to start over and re-take the 60 hour QE course, plus pass a background check and renew your PTIN. If the bond was purchased by H&R Block then you will have to get a new bond. And no, you do not qualify for in lieu of from working with H&R Block.

Thank you for the reply, I spoke to one of your customer representative over the phone 877-8502832 as per UPS appointment to follow up with process, they were asking for the form to do the scan service. I called and can't find my information and need it to do the process as a new applicant. Help please!! I am lost now.

Having trouble log in into my account to get a form for Live Scan Service. How do I obtain this form form CTEC? if does not let me get into my account for renewal. try to update password and I do not get any Email as response with any link.
Live scans are only for new applicants, not CRTPs who are already registered. As for trying to update your password and not receiving an email, those issues are usually because the email we have on file may be different from the one you're checking. Call CTEC if you continue to have troubles.
I have not had my fingerprints taken before. Each place I call that offers this service says I need a Request For Live Scan Service. How do I obtain this form from CTEC?
